Jocelyn Chang, distinguished as a pianist of profound artistry and versatility, came to the United States after making her acclaimed piano concerto debut at the National Concert Hall in Taiwan, winning an array of awards and having her performances broadcast nationally. As an avid chamber musician, Jocelyn has collaborated with distinguished musicians and faculty artists from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan), USC Thornton School of Music, and UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Her engagements also include performing the complete sonatas for violin and piano by Beethoven and Brahms, as well as a concert tour with Grawemeyer Award-winning composer Chinary Ung.
Dr. Chang enjoys a rewarding career as a performer and teaching artist. She is Chair of Keyboard Studies and Associate Professor at Pasadena City College (PCC) in California. At PCC, she was nominated for the “Risser Outstanding Teacher Award” for her leadership in the Keyboard Studies program and her contributions to the college. She has taught at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music as an Assistant Lecturer and received the “Model Teacher” recognition. At the University of Southern California (USC), she served as Vice President of the Music Teachers National Association - USC Collegiate Chapter.
In addition, Dr. Chang has taught at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), where she served as Lecturer of Piano and Director of Keyboard Studies. At CSUSB, she was also the Faculty Advisor for both the Music Teachers National Association–CSUSB Collegiate Chapter and the Piano Society. Deeply committed to expanding access to the musical arts for underserved communities, she raised funds to establish the International Distinguished Performing Arts Foundation (IDPAF), the Dr. Howard Chen Piano Scholarship, and the Franklin Tzeng Piano Scholarship. She founded the annual Piano Day event and was the Artistic Director of the Distinguished Artists Series at CSUSB. Her piano students have been prizewinners at competitions and gained acceptance to institutions, including Harvard, Brown, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Toronto, USC Thornton School of Music, Berklee College of Music, UCLA, and UC Berkeley. Many have gone on to successful careers as physicians or music professionals.
Internationally, Dr. Chang has been invited to perform as a guest artist at esteemed engagements and institutions, including the InterHarmony International Music Festival in Italy, the College Music Society's National Conference, the Beverly Hills International Music Festival, the Matthay Piano Festival, Aletheia University in Taiwan, Northern Illinois University, Illinois Wesleyan University, University of West Georgia, Pomona College, Marymount California University, California State University, Fresno, and Los Angeles City College. She has also presented masterclasses for the Music Teachers' Association of California and at various universities in the United States and Taiwan. In high demand as an adjudicator for festivals and competitions, Dr. Chang has served as a judge for the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Piano Competition, Music Teachers' Association of California Piano Competition, United States Open Music Competition, Southwestern Youth Music Festival Competition, Liana Cohen Music Festival Competition, La Sierra University Concerto Competition, Biola University Piano Performance Scholarships Competition, Musical Arts Piano Competition of Orange County, Diamond Bar Performing Arts Challenge Competition, Southern California Junior Bach Festival Competition, and Glendale Youth Orchestra Piano Concerto Competition.
Jocelyn’s accolades and top prizes include the National Piano Competition in Taiwan, SinoPac Young Artist Piano Competition, Taipei Piano Competition, National Taiwan Normal University Piano Concerto Competition, Taiwan Pace Young Musician Awards, Taiwan National Chamber Music Competition, Taipei Double Bass Competition, and National Double Bass Competition in Taiwan. She has also garnered numerous awards and notable scholarships, including the USC Thornton School of Music Dean's Full Scholarship, USC Thornton School of Music Graduate Teaching Assistantship, Gabriel Mekler Memorial Endowed Music Full Scholarship, USC Thornton Board of Advisors Mentorship Program, Claire and Allan Jensen Endowed Scholarship, Peabody Conservatory Scholarship, KAWAI Music Scholarship, and National Taiwan 228 Memorial Scholarship. Additionally, she was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society.
Jocelyn holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with Distinction from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she majored in Piano Performance with minors in Keyboard Collaborative Arts, Double Bass Performance, and Music Education. She received her Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University; and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the National Taiwan Normal University, where she majored in Piano Performance with a minor in Double Bass Performance. As part of her early training, she was admitted to Taiwan’s highly selective national program for gifted young musicians—a prestigious, government-funded initiative that provided rigorous, conservatory-style instruction within the academic school system to the nation’s most exceptional young artists. She later pursued advanced studies at the Belarusian State Academy of Music in Minsk, Belarus. Throughout her academic journey, she was under the tutelage of Boris Slutsky, Daniel Pollack, Dr. Stewart Gordon, Kevin Fitz-Gerald, Zoya Kocharskaya, and En Wang.
Jocelyn Chang is on the artist faculty at the Interharmony International Music Festival in Piedmont, Italy. She is a member of the College Music Society (CMS), the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), the Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC), and the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT).
